The River Club is a members sports and social club on the banks of the Hogsmill River.
The River Club
THE HISTORY.
The club has a long and rich history, dating back to the early 1900s.
The original house was built in the late 19th century but in 1923 it was acquired by the New Zealand Shipping Co. They turned the house and grazing land into the Maori Sports Ground. During the war it was used as a base for the company as an office. In 1972 the P&O shipping company took over the New Zealand shipping company but kept the name of the sports club. In 2003 a new owner renamed it The River Club.
The club features a range of facilities including gym equipment, a small swimming pool, spa facilities and treatments, a short 3-hole pitch and putt course and a small cafe area. The club sits in Metropolitan Open Land.
The club was bought in 2020 and the new owners are keen to significantly improve the club facilities and return the heritage building to use as a cafe and restaurant. They are also exploring what wider community benefit can be created across the site.
